Side/thorax airbags, rear: resistance too high
E65, E66
Complaint:
The airbag warning light is permanently lit.
The following fault codes are stored in the "rear seat satellite" (SSH) fault memory,
indicating a contact fault with excessive contact resistance.
9A4A - "Resistance, firing pellet, rear right thorax airbag triggering circuit, too high..."
9A6B - "Resistance, firing pellet, rear left thorax airbag triggering circuit, too high..."
Cause:
Excessive resistance at contacts to respective
B-pillar connector.
Affected vehicles:
E65, E66
Manufacturing period: start of series production until 1 November 2002
Procedure:
In case of customer complaint, perform diagnosis with DIS or GT1. Work through the
corresponding test module and eliminate the contact resistance using the repair cables.
1.
Disconnect the car battery
2.
Fit the repair cable to the respective door as follows:
-
Remove the door trim from the affected door.
-
Remove the function carrier.
-
Remove the door wiring harness.
-
Feed the repair cable through the cable protection sleeve towards the B-pillar
connector.
Important:
The plug contacts must not be damaged when doing this. To this end, the
connectors are protected by a short plastic hose.

Disconnect and cut off the blue/red and red triggering circuit wires from the B-
pillar connector (slots 11 and 12). Connect the corresponding wires from the
repair cable to the same slots.

Reinstall the door wiring harness and the function carrier. Cut off the existing
connector for the thorax airbag from the door wiring harness(!).

Connect the repair cable connector for the thorax airbag and if necessary secure
the excess length of the repair cable to the door wiring harness with insulating
tape.
3.
Replace the thorax triggering circuit wires (B-pillar) on the vehicle wiring harness as
follows:
-
Uncover the vehicle wiring harness in the respective B-pillar.
-
Disconnect the two plug connectors for the thorax triggering circuit wires from the
B-pillar connector (sockets 11 and 12). Unfasten the fabric adhesive tape from
the vehicle wiring harness as far as an easily accessible point.
-
Shorten the triggering circuit wires to offset lengths, both on the vehicle wiring
harness and on the B-pillar repair cable.
Strip a length of 4 mm at the ends of wires.
